Meghalaya Extends GHADC Term; CEM Marak Resigns

The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved a six-month extension of the tenure of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), allowing the council to continue functioning beyond its originally scheduled term.

Following detailed deliberations, the Cabinet decided to extend the council’s tenure from April 18, 2026, to October 18, 2026, with the objective of ensuring administrative continuity in the region.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, Albinush R. Marak, tendered his resignation on March 16, just hours before a scheduled no-confidence motion against him in the council.

Marak submitted his resignation to the Chairman of the GHADC ahead of the meeting scheduled for 11 am, stating that he was stepping down “on moral grounds”.

In his letter dated March 16, Marak said he was resigning from the office of Chief Executive Member with immediate effect.

Reflecting on his tenure, he stated that he had “sincerely endeavoured to work for the welfare, development, and overall progress of the people of Garo Hills”.

Marak further noted that the Executive Committee under his leadership had taken several steps to introduce and implement essential rules, regulations, and laws demanded by the people of Garo Hills, with the aim of safeguarding their rights, customs, and interests.

The letter also stated that multiple initiatives and developmental measures were undertaken with the sole objective of serving the people and strengthening the administrative functioning of the council.
