Mitchell Starc Retires from T20 Internationals to Focus on Tests and 2027 World Cup

Australia’s premier fast bowler Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from Twenty20 internationals, drawing the curtain on a 12-year career in the format. The 35-year-old confirmed the decision to concentrate on Test cricket and remain in peak condition for the 2027 men’s ODI World Cup.

Starc made his T20I debut against Pakistan in 2012 and went on to play 65 matches, taking 79 wickets at an economy rate of 7.74. He is Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker in T20Is, behind Adam Zampa. He featured in five T20 World Cups, missing only the 2016 edition due to injury, and was a vital member of the 2021 title-winning squad in Dubai.

“Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority,” Starc said. “Looking ahead to tours of India, the Ashes, and the 2027 World Cup, this is the best way forward to stay fresh, fit and at my best.”

Australia’s schedule from 2026 leaves little room for rest, with back-to-back Test series against Bangladesh, South Africa, and New Zealand before a five-Test tour of India in early 2027, followed by the 150th anniversary Test against England, an away Ashes campaign, and the World Cup.

Chair of selectors George Bailey hailed Starc’s T20 contribution: “He was an integral member of the 2021 World Cup-winning side and had a great skill for blowing games open with his wicket-taking ability. He should be incredibly proud of his career.”

Starc’s retirement coincided with the announcement of Australia’s squad for the three-match T20I series against New Zealand in October. Cameron Green has been rested, Nathan Ellis withdrew for family reasons, while Matt Short, Mitchell Owen, and Marcus Stoinis return to the side.
