Mizoram Warns of Legal Action as Truckers Threaten NH-306 Blockade

The Mizoram government has urged truckers and commercial vehicle owners in Kolasib district to withdraw their proposed four-day blockade of National Highway-306, warning that any obstruction of the vital route would invite strict legal action.

The Kolasib unit of the Mizoram Tipper Association (MTA) and the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of commercial vehicle drivers and owners have announced a blockade from 7 a.m. Thursday to 4 p.m. Sunday on the Sairang–Vairengte and Kolasib–Bairabi stretches of NH-306 to protest the poor condition of the road and the sluggish pace of repairs.

Explaining the situation, Transport Minister R. Sapdanga said heavy rains had severely damaged the highway — also known as NH-6 in certain stretches — causing unavoidable delays. “With the onset of winter, repair work will now accelerate,” he assured. He added that 985 vehicles, including 367 loaded trucks bound for Aizawl, were cleared in the last 24 hours, leaving no trucks stranded as of Wednesday morning.

PWD Minister Vanlalhiana confirmed that the NHIDCL-led restoration of the Sairang–Vairengte stretch is expected to be completed by next month, with the state PWD providing logistical support. Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) H. Ramthiengliana said additional forces would be deployed in Kolasib to maintain order during the agitation period.

However, MTA general secretary Vanlallungtiawia expressed dissatisfaction, saying the current repair pace is “painfully slow” and warned that if no visible progress is made, the agitation could intensify. The associations have also threatened to block the Kawnpui–Durtlang diversion road linking Aizawl with Kolasib to press their demand.

The government, while acknowledging the truckers’ grievances, has appealed for restraint, emphasizing that disruption of highway movement could hamper essential supplies to the state capital and other districts.
