Modi Opens BJP Delhi HQ, Recalls Jan Sangh Legacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the newly-constructed office of the BJP’s Delhi unit on Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Marg, using the occasion to underline his party’s historical bond with the capital and its people.

Tracing the roots back to the Jan Sangh, the BJP’s parent organisation, Modi said, “Since the Jan Sangh was founded, we have worked to serve the people of Delhi in every way.” He recalled how Jan Sangh members helped rehabilitate partition refugees, and leaders like L.K. Advani and V.K. Malhotra gave voice to Delhi residents through the Metropolitan Council.

The Prime Minister also remembered the Emergency years, when Jan Sangh leaders, he said, stood with citizens against government oppression. Referring to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, he noted that BJP workers protected the community wherever possible. Paying tributes to veterans like Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj, Modi said they “devoted their lives to the party.”

Shifting focus to governance, Modi took a sharp dig at the Congress, accusing it of misleading people on economic issues. “What was the state of income tax until 2014? Incomes above ₹2 lakh were taxable. Today, incomes up to ₹12 lakh are taxed at zero,” he asserted, calling Congress leaders “bayaan-bahadur” (bold statement-makers) who specialise in false claims.

He further criticised the opposition for working against public interest, citing Himachal Pradesh as an example where cement prices were hiked soon after GST reductions. “The government there immediately started looting what should have gone to the people,” he alleged.
