Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday accused the Congress-led UPA government of showing weakness during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, saying it “surrendered before the terrorists” despite the Indian forces being ready to strike Pakistan.
Speaking at the inauguration of the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, the Prime Minister said, “Our forces were ready to attack Pakistan, but the government, under foreign pressure, stopped them.”
Without naming former Home Minister P. Chidambaram, Modi referred to his recent statement that the Congress government had decided against military retaliation after the 2008 attack.
During his 22-minute address, the Prime Minister highlighted India’s developmental strides and made several key announcements.
Five Key Takeaways from PM Modi’s Speech
1. Congress “sent message of weakness” in 2008:
Modi said the then Congress government “surrendered before terrorists” after the 26/11 attack and failed to act despite national outrage and military readiness.
2. Empowerment of poor and middle class a top priority:
He credited GST reforms for reducing prices and strengthening purchasing power, noting record-breaking sales during Navratri. Modi urged citizens to adopt the mantra of “Be Swadeshi, Buy Swadeshi.”
3. Mumbai’s “long wait is over”:
The PM inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport, calling it a symbol of modern India and a major step in making the Mumbai region Asia’s largest connectivity hub. He also announced a fully underground metro, easing urban travel.
4. Farmers to connect with European markets:
The airport, designed in the shape of a lotus, will open international markets for Maharashtra’s farmers, boost exports, and attract new investments and industries.
5. India to become global MRO hub by 2030:
With over 1,000 new aircraft on order, Modi said India will emerge as a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub by 2030, creating thousands of jobs for youth.
Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Mumbai, will meet UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday to discuss bilateral cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and innovation.
