Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday asserted that the people of the country, particularly the women of West Bengal, will not forgive the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) for what he described as an insult to President Droupadi Murmu. He said the public would ultimately teach the party a lesson.
Addressing a public rally in New Delhi, the Prime Minister remarked that the incident in West Bengal was not merely an insult to the President but an affront to the Constitution itself. He added that arrogance, regardless of how powerful it may appear, eventually leads to downfall.
The remarks came after President Murmu expressed displeasure on Saturday over changes to an official programme during her visit to North Bengal. The President noted that neither Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee nor any state minister was present to receive her during the visit, an issue the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) described as disrespectful to the head of state.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth approximately ₹33,500 crore in the national capital. These included the inauguration of 2,722 newly constructed flats under the central government’s General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) redevelopment programme.
He also criticized the governance approach of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi, alleging that earlier administrations focused on making excuses rather than completing development projects. According to him, several initiatives that were previously stalled in files are now progressing rapidly, with the government working in a mission mode to address the capital’s challenges, including efforts to clean the Yamuna River.
Highlighting the theme of women’s empowerment, Modi stated that women in India are making rapid progress in various sectors, including politics, administration, science, sports, and social service.
Metro Expansion Projects
The Prime Minister also inaugurated two new corridors of the Delhi Metro and laid the foundation stone for three additional metro lines, aimed at strengthening connectivity across the national capital.
The newly inaugurated corridors include the approximately 12.3-km Majlis Park–Maujpur Babarpur stretch of the Pink Line and the 9.9-km Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park extension of the Magenta Line. These corridors are expected to significantly improve connectivity for several areas such as Burari, Jagatpur-Wazirabad, Khajuri Khas, Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar, Madhuban Chowk, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Bhalswa and Majlis Park.
The Majlis Park–Maujpur Babarpur section features eight elevated stations and forms part of the already operational Majlis Park–Shiv Vihar Pink Line. With this addition, the Pink Line now extends to about 71.56 kilometres, becoming India’s first fully operational “Ring Metro”. The corridor also includes a new bridge over the Yamuna and a double-decker viaduct carrying both the metro line and a road flyover.
Meanwhile, the Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park extension will expand the Magenta Line to a total length of around 49 kilometres, enhancing metro access for several residential and commercial areas
