Modi, Trump Strike Conciliatory Tone Amid Tariff Tensions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday responded positively to US President Donald Trump’s remarks on ongoing trade talks, with both leaders signaling an intent to ease friction despite steep American tariffs on Indian goods and energy imports.

“India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership,” Modi said in a post on X, adding that discussions were progressing and would be concluded “at the earliest.”

His comments came shortly after Trump announced on Truth Social that the two nations were “continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers,” describing Modi as a “very good friend” and expressing confidence in a successful conclusion.

The remarks mark a shift in tone from Washington, which last month imposed 25% tariffs on Indian exports along with an additional 25% duty on Indian imports of Russian oil, citing New Delhi’s refusal to curb energy trade with Moscow. The combined effect of the measures has raised total duties to 50%, sparking concerns in Indian industry and prompting warnings of a potential trade standoff.

Trump’s softened language follows weeks of sharp criticism of India’s oil dealings with Russia. Speaking at the Oval Office recently, he called Modi a “great Prime Minister” and stressed that the two leaders would “always be friends,” though he maintained his concerns about India’s energy policy.

The latest exchanges suggest a willingness on both sides to step back from confrontation. While Washington remains intent on curbing Russian energy flows, it also seeks to preserve India’s role as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific. For New Delhi, the challenge lies in balancing its strategic autonomy with the need to maintain a stable trade relationship with the US.

Analysts say the outcome of the negotiations will hinge on whether both governments can craft a compromise that addresses tariff concerns without undermining India’s energy security or America’s broader geopolitical objectives.
