Mohammed Shami Dismisses Retirement Rumours

Mohammed Shami has completely rejected the rumors of his retirement. 34-year-old Shami clearly said that as long as he has passion and inspiration for the game, he will remain on the field. Shami has not got a place in the Indian team for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England and the Asia Cup starting in the UAE from September 9.

While talking to a news channel, Shami gave a sharp reply to the rumors of his retirement and said, 'If someone has a problem with me, then come forward and tell me. Whose life will become better if I retire? Why should I become a rock in someone's life that you want me to retire? The day I get bored, I will leave the field myself. You may not select me or make me play, it does not matter to me. I will keep working hard.'

Shami, who is ready to play domestic cricket, also made it clear that if he does not get a chance in international cricket, he will continue playing domestic cricket. He said, 'If you do not select me in international matches, I will play domestic cricket. I will keep playing somewhere. A decision like retirement is taken when you feel that you are bored, when you do not want to wake up at 7 am for a test match. But that time has not come for me yet. If you want, I will wake up even at 5 am and get ready.'

Unfulfilled dream of winning ODI World Cup Shami said that his biggest goal is to win the ODI World Cup, which is his only unfulfilled dream. Recalling India's reaching the final of the 2023 World Cup, he said, 'I have only one dream left, that is to win the ODI World Cup. In 2023, we were very close. We had confidence, but there was also fear in the knockout stage. The enthusiasm and support of the fans motivated us. Maybe it was not in my destiny at that time, but I want to be there in 2027.'

Shami also talked about his fitness . Despite battling injuries in recent times, he has worked hard on his fitness in the last two months. He lost weight, gained rhythm in bowling and prepared to bowl long spells. Shami said, 'I trained, improved my skills, practiced batting and fielding, sweated it out in the gym. I did everything. My focus is on gaining rhythm and bowling long spells.'

As long as there is love, I will keep playing Shami said, 'I still love cricket. The day this passion ends, I will leave the field myself. Till then I will keep fighting.' This statement of Shami not only shows his determination and passion, but also tells that he can still give a lot to Indian cricket. Seeing this passion of his, fans have definitely hoped for Shami's return in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Shami last played for India in the Champions Trophy in early 2025. India won the title by defeating New Zealand in the final and Shami took 9 wickets in 5 matches, the joint-most for India along with Varun Chakravarthy. However, his bowling was expensive, as he conceded 5.68 runs per over.

Shami is playing Duleep Trophy . Shami is a part of the East Zone team in the Duleep Trophy starting on 28 August.

This tournament is being played in its old format, inter-zonal method. Shami has played 64 Tests, 108 ODIs and 25 T20 Internationals so far.
