Moidams of Assam Included in The World Heritage List, UNESCO

UNESCO has included 'Moidams' of the Ahom dynasty in Assam in the World Heritage List. It was decided to include it in the UNESCO heritage list in the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee held in New Delhi.

The Government of India was trying to include it in the heritage list for the last 10 years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed happiness over the declaration of 'Moidams' as a world heritage.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has thanked PM Narendra Modi and Union Culture Minister Gajendra Shekhawat for this achievement.

'Moidams' is the first cultural property of North East India, which has got a place in the UNESCO heritage list. 'Moidams' is associated with the tradition of the Ahom dynasty of Assam, which ruled Assam for about 600 years.

'Charaideo Moidams' is a mound-like structure, in which people belonging to the Ahom dynasty used to bury their beloved belongings. The history of 'Moidams' is said to be about 600 years old.

Currently, UNESCO's World Heritage List includes 1,199 properties from 168 countries.

On Friday, Union Minister Gajendra Shekhawat informed the Chief Minister of Assam about this when he was addressing a press conference.

On receiving the information, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this is very good news for Assam, as 'Charaideo Moidams' is now officially a UNESCO heritage site. Assam will always be indebted to the Center for this honor. This step is a matter of pride not only for Assam but for the whole country.

CM Himanta said that the credit for this achievement goes to PM Modi, as he has made tireless efforts to include it in the World Heritage. According to the rule, the World Heritage Committee considers only one entry from a country. This time the central government has selected Assam 'Charaideo Moidams'. The Assam government had submitted a dossier in this regard to the Prime Minister in 2023.
