Nagaland: 79 Candidates Withdrawn Nominations From Urban Local Body Elections

A total of 79 candidates have withdrawn their nominations from the upcoming urban local body (ULB) elections in Nagaland, a State Election Commission official said. Tuesday was the last day for withdrawal of nominations.

A total of 669 candidates, including 238 women, had filed nomination papers for the three municipal corporations and 36 municipal councils in the state, including areas in eastern Nagaland.

The State Election Commission said that 17 persons from Shamtor Municipal Council, 13 from Longleng Municipal Council, nine from Tijit Municipal Council, eight each from Chifobozou Municipal Council, Pungro and Naginimora Municipal Councils, four from Aboi Municipal Council, three from Dimapur Municipal Council and one each from Kohima, Mokokchung, Wokha, Zunheboto, Chojuba, Aghunato, Atoizu, Peren and Niuland Municipal Councils have withdrawn their nominations.

Voting for urban local body elections will be held in Nagaland on June 26. Urban local body elections will be held in the state after 20 years. These elections were last held in the year 2004.

For the first time in the state, there will be 33 percent women reservation in urban local body elections.

Meanwhile, a total of 61 people filed nominations in 14 municipal councils falling under East Nagaland People's Organisation (ENPO) areas even as the ENPO had called for abstaining from the polls. Two nomination papers were rejected during scrutiny while 59 candidates withdrew their nominations till Tuesday.

With this, there are no candidates left in the urban local body elections in the ENPO region.
