Need 50 Big Ponds in NE to Divert Flood Water: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a review meeting on flood management in Delhi. In this meeting, Home Minister Amit Shah also emphasized on the use of satellite images provided by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for flood and water management.

During the meeting, he also reviewed the preparations to deal with Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF).

During this review meeting, Amit Shah said that efforts should be made to upgrade the water level forecasting system of rivers for better flood management.

He further said that at least 50 large ponds should be built in the Northeast to divert and collect the water of the Brahmaputra. This will help develop agriculture, irrigation and tourism at low cost in those areas and will also help in dealing with floods, which will also benefit the local economy.

Let us tell you that the frequent floods in the Brahmaputra river in Assam and the Northeast are a big problem, as every year many people lose their lives and thousands of hectares of land are submerged.

At the same time, in the last few years, many people have died and hundreds have become homeless due to the floods caused by the bursting of the icy lake in Sikkim and Uttarakhand. Communication lines and road networks were also broken in this, which has become another major concern for the government during the monsoon.

The Home Minister further said that natural drainage system should be an important part of the design of road construction to deal with waterlogging in case of floods.

The Home Minister said that India's disaster management under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is moving forward with a 'zero accident approach'. During this, he directed the concerned departments to conduct a detailed study of the recent floods in Sikkim and Manipur and submit a report to the Union Home Ministry.

The Home Minister further said that the flood monitoring centres of Central Water Commission (CWC) should be in line with the requirements and international standards.

Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai and Union Jai Shakti Minister CR Patil were present in the review meeting chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah. Apart from these, Ministers of Water Resources, River Development and River Conservation, Earth Sciences, Environment-Forest and Climate Change, Road Transport and Highways, Chairman of Railway Board, Member of NDMA, Director General of NDRF and IMD, Chairman of CWC, NHAI and senior officials of the concerned ministries also attended.
