Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday after violent anti-corruption protests, led largely by Gen Z demonstrators, defied an indefinite curfew in Kathmandu.

The unrest erupted after the government imposed – and later lifted – a controversial social media ban. At least 19 people were killed and more than 100 injured on Monday when police used tear gas and rubber bullets to stop protesters storming parliament.

Despite Oli’s appeal for peaceful dialogue, anger spread nationwide, with protesters torching tyres, pelting stones at police, and reportedly setting fire to politicians’ homes. Some ministers were evacuated by military helicopters. Flights into Kathmandu were disrupted due to heavy smoke from fires. Protest organizers say their movement is driven by young people demanding a corruption-free Nepal, better access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
Oli’s exit now plunges the fragile Himalayan democracy into deeper political uncertainty, reminiscent of the instability that followed the 2008 abolition of its monarchy.
