Nepal: Saurya Airlines Crashes While Takeoff at Kathmandu Airport. 18 Died

A major plane crash occurred in Nepal's capital Kathmandu on Wednesday. A Shaurya Airlines plane crashed during takeoff from Tribhuvan International Airport. 

According to the Kathmandu Post, 18 bodies have been recovered from the accident site.  The pilot was rescued safely and sent to the hospital.

According to a report in the Kathmandu Post, TIA spokesperson Premnath Thakur said that there were 19 people on board the Pokhara-bound plane, including the aircrew. 

The plane crashed at around 11 am. Police and fire personnel are present at the accident site and rescue operations are underway. 

A security official posted at the airport told news agency PTI that the pilot of the plane has been taken to the hospital. He said that the fire in the plane has been extinguished. Police and firefighters are carrying out rescue operations at the accident site. 

According to the Kathmandu Post, eyewitnesses said the plane was taking off from the southern end of the runway and suddenly flipped over and the wing hit the ground directly, causing the plane to catch fire immediately. 

It then crashed into a ditch between the Buddha Air hangar and the radar station on the eastern side of the runway. Thick clouds of smoke can be seen at the airport in the viral video.
