New Zealand produced a clinical chase to defeat India by seven wickets in the second One-Day International, successfully overhauling a target of 285 with 15 balls to spare at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on Wednesday. The victory levels the three-match series 1–1.
Daryl Mitchell anchored the chase with a superb unbeaten 131 off 117 deliveries, striking 11 boundaries and two sixes. Mitchell reached his century in 96 balls and sealed the match with a boundary, guiding New Zealand to their highest-ever ODI run chase on Indian soil. Will Young provided strong support at the top, scoring 87 runs.
Earlier, after winning the toss and opting to bowl, New Zealand restricted India to 284 for 7 in 50 overs. KL Rahul led the Indian innings with an assured 112 not out from 92 balls, registering his eighth ODI century. Captain Shubman Gill contributed 56, while Rohit Sharma (24) and Virat Kohli (23) made modest starts but failed to convert.
New Zealand’s bowling effort was led by Christian Clarke, who picked up three wickets, applying pressure through the middle overs.
Rahul’s century also carried historic significance. The Indian batter became the only cricketer in the world to score ODI hundreds at every batting position from No. 1 to No. 6.
With the series now evenly poised, the deciding third ODI will be played on January 18 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
