The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced the launch of a new rail service connecting Narangi in Assam with Agartala in Tripura, a development expected to substantially enhance passenger connectivity across the northeastern region.
According to an official notification issued by the Office of the General Manager (Operations) at Maligaon, the inaugural run of the service will be flagged off from Narangi Railway Station on March 13, 2026. The inaugural special train, numbered 05660 Narangi–Agartala Inaugural Special, will depart Narangi at 2:30 PM and is scheduled to reach Agartala at 5:45 AM the following morning, establishing an important new rail corridor between Assam and Tripura.
En route, the train will halt at several strategically significant stations, including Jagiroad, Hojai, Lumding, New Haflong, Badarpur, New Karimganj, Dharmanagar, Kumarghat, and Ambassa. These stoppages are expected to provide improved connectivity for passengers travelling from the Barak Valley, the hill districts of Assam, and the northern regions of Tripura.
Railway authorities stated that the train will consist of 13 coaches, comprising AC Chair Car, AC Three-Tier, Sleeper Class, Second Sitting coaches, and luggage-cum-brake vans, thereby offering a range of travel options to accommodate passengers across multiple fare categories.
The introduction of the service is anticipated to particularly benefit commuters travelling between Assam’s central districts, the hill regions, and Tripura, providing a more reliable and convenient transportation option while simultaneously strengthening the broader rail network across the Northeast.
Officials further indicated that the regular operational timetable of the Narangi–Agartala Express will be notified separately following the inaugural run. The service is expected to operate as a daily train between Narangi and Agartala, with the detailed schedule to be announced by railway authorities in due course.
Railway departments have also been directed to undertake extensive publicity regarding the launch of the new service to ensure maximum public awareness. Authorities believe the introduction of the train will significantly bolster inter-state connectivity, facilitate smoother passenger movement, and further reinforce the ongoing expansion of rail infrastructure in the northeastern region.
