Amidst the political uproar over the screening of voter list in Bihar, the Election Commission (ECI) has clarified that this exercise will be done in every state of the country. In this, voters will be verified by going door to door. Through this, the ECI wants to ensure that no non-Indian voter is in the list.
Commission sources said that the next turn is of those states where assembly elections are to be held in 2026. These include Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. After the elections in Bihar, a campaign will be launched in these states.
The real test of this exercise will be in Assam and West Bengal. Politics is already heated here over the presence of Bangladeshi infiltrators.
The next phase is for Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Goa and Manipur. Elections are due here in 2027. Sources said that there is a plan to complete the screening of voter lists of all states before the Lok Sabha elections in 2029. There are elections in 17 states in 2028-29.
At the same time, the opposition has questioned the commission's decision and announced a movement. In this sequence, there will be a road blockade in Bihar on Wednesday. The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and opposition parties have filed a petition in the Supreme Court.
It has been argued in the petitions that deciding citizenship is the job of the government and not the commission. Documents like Aadhar card, ration card are not valid for screening, whereas 90% of the people of Bihar have these. Lakhs of people go to other states. This is a big challenge for them. The case is to be heard on July 10.
According to ECI, 7.90 crore forms were printed for special screening in Bihar. Out of this, 7.7 crore (more than 97%) were distributed. According to the Commission's data till 6 pm on July 8, about 3.70 crore (46.95%) forms have been submitted. Out of these, 18.16% forms have been uploaded online. The last date for submitting the forms is July 25.
Politics is heated on the voter list revision being done for Bihar elections. The opposition has called for Bihar Bandh on July 9. Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi will also participate in it. At Bihiya station in Bhojpur, former RJD MLA Bhai Dinesh along with his supporters stopped Shramjeevi Express and Vibhuti Express and raised slogans
