Senior journalist Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty has etched her name in history by being elected President of the Press Club of India (PCI), becoming the first woman to lead the organisation in its 68-year existence. She is also the first journalist from Northeast India to assume the prestigious role.
Barooah registered a resounding victory in the election, securing 1,019 votes, while her nearest rival Atul Mishra received 129 votes, underscoring the overwhelming confidence reposed in her by the journalistic fraternity.
Expressing gratitude after her win, Barooah said she remains committed to strengthening professional solidarity, expanding inclusivity, and amplifying diverse voices within Indian media. She emphasised that the Press Club of India must continue to function as a strong, independent, and representative forum for journalists across the country.
Her election is being widely celebrated as a watershed moment for gender representation and regional inclusion in Indian journalism, breaking long-standing barriers and setting a powerful new precedent in one of the nation’s most influential press institutions.
