Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday said notifications by neighbouring states of Nagaland and Mizoram regarding immigrants could impact Manipur and authorities have been alerted to prevent illegal entry of people.
CM Biren Singh said during an event in Imphal that the Nagaland government has recently issued a notification stating that the base year for several communities is 1963 and for others 1940 for determining legal settlers. He said the Mizoram government has also issued an order that people who came to that state after 1951 cannot buy land there.
He further said that these developments may have an impact on us as a neighbouring state. Therefore, I have instructed my officers to be vigilant so that no illegal immigrant can enter Manipur.
Let us tell you that the Nagaland government recently issued a notification for enumeration of Garo, Kuki, Kachari and Mikir (Karbi) and Nepali / Gorkha people settled in Kohima district and their direct descendants. The enumeration will be done for Garo, Kuki, Kachari and Mikir (Karbi) people who settled in Kohima district before December 1, 1963. The cut-off date for Nepali / Gorkhas is December 31, 1940.
The CM had earlier said in a social media post that in response to illegal migrants being detected in our neighboring states, I want to assure you that the Manipur government has proactively taken steps to protect the state against potential infiltration. We have increased vigilance at major entry points, especially Mao Gate and Jiribam, to prevent any illegal migration.
Meanwhile, while answering media questions on the election results in Haryana, the Chief Minister claimed that the BJP always works with the people at the grassroots level, while the Congress works for the creamy layer. The trends of the Haryana assembly elections show that the Congress is heading towards a shocking defeat. He said, the impossible becomes possible under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I want to thank our leaders for working tirelessly for the country. I hope that the BJP will form the government in Haryana
