One State, One Dress: Tripura Brings Common Uniforms for Govt Schools

In a landmark move aimed at bringing uniformity and identity across the state’s education system, the Tripura government has decided to introduce standardised school uniforms for all state-run schools, including Vidyajyoti and PM-SHRI institutions, from the next academic session.

An official notification issued on Wednesday said the decision seeks to ensure “consistent standards and a unified identity” among students.

Who Gets What?

Vidyajyoti Schools → Will follow one common uniform.

PM-SHRI Schools → Will follow a separate common uniform.

Other Government Schools → Will adopt another prescribed uniform design.

Exempted Schools → Shishu Bihar H.S. School, Sukhamoy H.S. School, Umakanta Academy, and PM Shri Radha Kishore Institution.

Implementation Roadmap

For the current academic year, both old and new uniforms will be permitted to ensure a smooth transition.

From the next academic session, the new uniforms will be compulsory for all students from classes 1 to 12.

District Education Officers (DEOs) have been instructed to ensure strict compliance across their jurisdictions.

Free Uniforms Instead of Cash

Director of Secondary Education, N.C. Sharma, explained that every student will be provided with one pair of uniforms free of cost.

“Earlier, we used to provide ₹600 to each student for buying uniforms. But there were reports of non-compliance. This time, instead of money, the government will directly supply the uniforms,” Sharma clarified.

Samagra Shiksha Link

Under the Samagra Shiksha scheme, uniforms are centrally supplied to specific student categories from classes 1 to 8. The distribution of the newly prescribed sets has already started in the state.

Significance

The move marks a major policy shift in Tripura’s education system, seeking to erase disparities, instil equality, and create a strong collective identity among students across government schools.
