Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday announced that rules under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Games Act, 2025 will come into force from October 1. The Act, notified on August 22, prohibits all online real-money games—whether based on skill or chance—making both participation and operation illegal.
The law follows three years of consultations with industry stakeholders, with a final round of discussions still underway.
Vaishnaw also unveiled details of the ambitious ‘India AI Mission’, which aims to set up more than 500 data labs across the country. The mission will channel significant funding into developing large language models (LLMs), with select companies chosen to lead this effort.
