Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi Scheduled To Visit Manipur on Monday

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit Manipur on July 8 to address and resolve the Manipur crisis. During his visit, Gandhi will meet CSO leaders of the state and meet internally displaced people in Churachandpur, Moirang and other places.

Rahul Gandhi's scheduled visit to Manipur will be his first visit across the country after being appointed as the leader of the opposition.

Earlier, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had accused the BJP-led government of pushing Manipur into "civil war" due to its policies and politics.

The Congress leader also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting the state since the ethnic violence broke out.

Initiating the opposition's debate in the Lok Sabha on the motion of thanks to the President's address, Gandhi alleged that the government was behaving as if nothing had happened in Manipur. The Congress leader said it was as if Manipur was not a state of India.

He said, "For the Prime Minister, Manipur is not a state. We urged the Prime Minister to give a message, go there. But no one. You cannot get a reply (from the Prime Minister)." Gandhi also referred to the plight of women in the northeastern state.

Responding to a comment by the ruling party, he said, "You do not include women in your organisation, but I can speak about them." Manipur has been on the boil since May last year as ethnic violence erupted in the state following a march organised by Kuki tribals in the hill districts to protest against the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the valley-dominated Meitei community
