Opposition Moves No-Confidence Motion Against Speaker Om Birla

In a stunning move, opposition parties on Tuesday submitted a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, intensifying political tensions during the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament. The motion carries the signatures of 118 Members of Parliament, reflecting broad opposition unity on the issue.

According to news agency IANS, which cited parliamentary sources, Speaker Om Birla is expected to stay away from Lok Sabha proceedings until the no-confidence motion is defeated. Sources indicated that he will only resume presiding over the House after the motion is formally rejected, a step aimed at maintaining institutional neutrality during the process.

The opposition has accused the Speaker of partisan conduct and alleged that opposition voices are being consistently denied adequate opportunity to speak in the House. Though no official statement has been issued by the Speaker’s office, the development marks a rare challenge to the authority of the presiding officer of the Lower House.

Parliamentary sources further revealed that the no-confidence motion is likely to be taken up for discussion on March 9. The current phase of the Budget Session is scheduled to conclude on February 13, after which both Houses of Parliament will adjourn.

Parliamentary proceedings are set to resume on March 8 for the next phase of the session.

Political observers note that while no-confidence motions against the Speaker are uncommon, the move underscores growing friction between the government and the opposition over the functioning of Parliament. The coming weeks are expected to witness sharp political exchanges as the House reconvenes to debate the motion.

The outcome of the motion is largely seen as a formality, given the numerical strength of the ruling alliance in the Lok Sabha. However, opposition parties view the move as a symbolic protest against what they describe as repeated procedural lapses and erosion of parliamentary conventions.
