A pall of grief has descended upon the Banakumari area of Yogendra Nagar after the untimely death of seven-year-old Deepanita Pal, a second-grade student of Khudiram Bose English Medium School in capital Agartala.
The child’s demise has ignited widespread outrage, with her family alleging severe negligence and inhumane conduct by a teacher during a Vande Bharat celebration on November 9.
According to the bereaved father, Debashish Pal, his daughter was compelled to stand under the scorching sun during the event despite repeatedly expressing that she was feeling unwell. The teacher reportedly dismissed her plea, insisting that it was “a winter day” and that the sun posed no danger.

Moments later, Deepanita collapsed, exhibiting symptoms of dizziness and physical distress.
She was immediately taken to Gobinda Ballav Hospital (GB Hospital), where doctors diagnosed her with sunstroke accompanied by paralysis on one side of her body.
Her condition deteriorated further when she suffered a second stroke on Saturday. Despite continued medical intervention, Deepanvita succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday morning, leaving her family shattered.

The grieving mother lamented that her daughter’s death was the direct consequence of the teacher’s callous disregard for a child’s suffering.
She asserted that had the teacher simply moved Deepanita from the sunlight to a shaded area, “our home would not have fallen silent today.”
She also alleged that no member of the school’s teaching staff initially visited the hospital to check on the child’s condition.
Only after the District Magistrate was informed did a few teachers reportedly arrive at the hospital—an act which the family described as “too late and too little.”
At the Battala crematorium, a heartbroken Debashish Pal appealed to the state government, demanding stringent punitive action against the teacher responsible. He questioned who would compensate for the “irreparable void” created by the loss of his seven-year-old daughter, emphasizing that students are meant to find their safest refuge under the guardianship of teachers.

The incident has sparked intense public discourse, with many calling it a grim reminder of the consequences of institutional negligence. The community now awaits a thorough, impartial investigation to determine the extent of accountability and ensure that such a tragedy is never repeated.
As the family mourns Deepanita’s untimely passing, the question remains: Will justice be served, and will the system confront the lapses that cost a girl Child her life?
