22-year-old shooter Manu Bhaker gives India its first medal in Paris Olympics 2024. Manu Bhaker created history by winning the bronze medal in the 10 meter air pistol event on Sunday ie July 28.
She has become the country's first female athlete to win an Olympic medal in shooting.
With 221.7 points, she missed the silver medal by a very close margin. The gold and silver medals were won by Korean shooters.
Earlier, Bhaker performed brilliantly in the 10m women's air pistol qualification at the Olympic Games.
She finished third by scoring 580 points, while Hungary's Veronica Major topped the list with 582 points. Fellow Indian shooter Rhythm Sangwan finished 15th with 573 points.
Bhaker's journey to this point has been remarkable. Born on February 18, 2002 in Jhajjar, Haryana, Bhaker initially participated in various sports like boxing and tennis, then her interest grew in shooting.
She made her international debut in 2017 and soon made her mark with her brilliant performance.
Meanwhile India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Manu Bhaker over the phone.
PM Modi congratulated Manu Bhaker over the phone and said, I am very happy to hear the news of your medal. You missed the silver by just 0.1 points, but you have brought glory to the country by winning the bronze medal. You are the first woman from India to win a medal in Olympic shooting. Many congratulations to you from my side. Your gun failed you in the Tokyo Olympics, but this time you made up for all the shortcomings.
On this, Manu Bhaker told PM Modi that she has more matches to play in the Paris Olympics, and she is hoping to perform well in them too. PM Modi said that this victory has increased your enthusiasm and confidence. I am confident that you will do well in the upcoming matches. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also enquired about the well-being of Manu Bhaker's fellow players in the Paris Olympics and also asked about the arrangements in Paris. On this, Manu Bhaker said that all the players are happy and are saying namaste to you.
