PM Inaugurates ₹18,500-Crore Projects in Assam, Hits Out at Congress Remarks on Bhupen Hazarika

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday dedicated and laid the foundation stone of infrastructure and industrial projects worth ₹18,500 crore in Assam. The projects were launched in Darang and Numaligarh in Golaghat district, where the PM also addressed massive public gatherings.

In Darang, Modi invoked Bharat Ratna awardee and legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika while taking on the opposition. “When we gave Bharat Ratna to Bhupen Hazarika, Congress President Kharge had said Modi is giving it to dancers and singers. No matter how many abuses I receive, I am a devotee of Lord Shiva, I swallow all the poison. But when someone else is insulted, I cannot tolerate it,” the PM said to loud applause.

At Numaligarh, the Prime Minister sharpened his attack on the Congress, accusing it of neglecting the poor and tribal communities during its tenure. “During the Congress rule, the poor were rejected, tribals were treated unfairly. Our mantra is ‘Nagrik Devo Bhava’ — for us, the public is God. The BJP government is committed to ensuring citizens do not face inconvenience,” he said.

Modi arrived in Guwahati on Saturday evening and headed directly to attend a special tribute meeting for Bhupen Hazarika. He later stayed at the State Guest House. His Assam visit follows the inauguration of development projects in Mizoram and Manipur earlier on Saturday.

The series of project launches highlights the Centre’s push for infrastructure and industrial growth in the Northeast, with Assam positioned as a key hub in the region’s development roadmap.
