PM Modi Reached China After 7 Years. To Attend SCO Summit

Prime Minister Modi has reached China on Saturday to attend the SCO Summit after a two-day visit to Japan. He has reached China after seven years.

Apart from the SCO Summit, PM Modi will also hold bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Putin.

During this, the program of President Putin's visit to India in December will also be discussed.

This visit of PM Modi is taking place at a time when the whole world is struggling with the tariff policies of US President Trump.

Trump has imposed 50% tariff on India and 30% tariff on China.

The SCO Summit is going to be held in China from 31 August to 1 September. Leaders of more than 20 countries will participate in it.

The Prime Minister was given a warm welcome by the Indian community when he arrived at a hotel in Tianjin. The Indian expatriates raised slogans of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Vande Mataram'.

At the same time, Chinese artists performed Indian classical music and dance in front of PM Modi. These artists have been learning Indian classical music and dance for many years.

According to Global Times, this visit of PM Modi can prove to be a big opportunity to reduce tensions between the two countries and promote bilateral dialogue. Through this summit, Jinping will try to show the world that he can provide an alternative to the US-led global order.

Along with this, the message from this summit will also be that America's efforts to isolate China, Russia, Iran and now India have failed. In the SCO Defense Ministers' meeting held in Qingdao in June 2025, India refused to sign the joint statement because it did not mention the Pahalgam terrorist attack of 22 April 2025.

Now this can be mentioned in the summit of SCO leaders. Along with this, India will try to get the support of member countries on the issue of terrorism. It is worth noting that Pakistan is also a member of SCO.

Last month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited China, where he met President Xi Jinping and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Jaishankar discussed issues such as sharing water resources data, trade sanctions, reducing tensions on the LAC and taking a tough stand against terrorism and extremism. According to media reports, this meeting prepared the roadmap for Modi's visit to China.

Modi and Jinping last met during the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia in October 2024. During this, bilateral talks were also held between the two.

In the 50-minute conversation, PM Modi had said that 'maintaining peace and stability on the border should be our priority. Mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual sensitivity should remain the foundation of our relations.

Xi Jinping last visited India in 2019. Then the two leaders met in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu. This visit was an important step towards strengthening India-China relations and managing mutual differences.

Both the leaders also agreed to maintain peace and stability on the border.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is a regional international organisation founded in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan later joined it in 2017. Iran will also become its member in 2023.

The objective of the SCO is to enhance security, economic and political cooperation among member countries. The organization formulates a common strategy on issues such as terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking and cyber crime.

*Why is this SCO summit special?*

1. Modi's first visit to China after the Galwan clash:

This is the first time Modi has visited China after the clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers 5 years ago. Because of this, the whole world is looking at this summit and the Modi-Jinping meeting.

2. Trump's high tariff on SCO countries:

Trump has also imposed high tariffs on the rest of the SCO countries including India (50%), China (30%), Kazakhstan (25%). In such a situation, this is important for those countries who are trying to stand on a common platform against American pressure.

3. Challenge to America's leadership:

Jinping wants to make this summit a platform to present an alternative to the US-led global order. China wants to show that it can become an alternative power by joining hands with countries like Russia, India, Iran.

4. India's agenda - focus on terrorism:

In the SCO Defence Ministers' meeting held in June 2025, India refused to sign the joint statement. In fact, there was no mention of the Pahalgam terror attack in it. Now in the main meeting, India will try to discuss terrorism and garner support. This issue will dominate in the presence of Pakistan.

5. Presence of more than 20 countries:

This time, not just SCO members, but leaders from more than 20 countries, including observer and partner countries, are taking part in the summit.

6. India-China relations improved:

For the first time since Galwan, there has been some softening on the border and trade. Direct flights began, talks were held on border trade, Kailash Mansarovar Yatra was resumed.
