PM Modi To Fly From Cyprus To Canada Today. Will Participate In G-7 Summit

Today is the second day of PM Modi's Cyprus visit. He reached Cyprus on 15 June, Where he met President Nikos Christodoulides. After this he met the Indian community.

Today Modi will be formally welcomed at the Presidential Palace of Cyprus, after which he will hold delegation level talks.

Then Modi will leave for Canada from Cyprus. Modi will stay here till 16-17 June.

The PM will attend the G7 summit held in Kananaskis, Alberta province of Canada. India received this invitation just 10 days before the summit began.

This will be PM Modi's first meeting with Canadian PM Mark Carney. Mark Carney became the new PM of Canada on 14 March after Justin Trudeau's resignation in January 2025. During Justin Trudeau's tenure, India-Canada relations had soured.

Will India-Canada relations improve with the G-7 summit, what can be discussed between Trump and Modi and what is the reason for the invitation coming late...

Question-1: What is G-7, which countries are there in it?

answer:G-7 i.e. 'Group of Seven' is a group of 7 countries of the world which are called the countries with 'modern economy'. These countries are - America, France, Britain, Japan, Italy, Canada and Germany.

Earlier its name used to be G-8. In 2014, when Russia occupied the neighboring country Crimea, the rest of the member countries expelled Russia from the group. Its name became G-7.

Question-2: What is the G-7 Summit, what is special about its agenda this time?

answer:Every year G-7 summit is held to discuss a fixed agenda, which is organized by the G-7 chairperson. Actually, all the 7 countries of G-7 chair it in turn. This year Canada is chairing it. In such a situation, G-7 summit will be held in Kananaskis city of Alberta province of Canada. Issues like global peace and security, economic stability, development and digital development are on the agenda of this summit.

Apart from this, the leaders and officers of the member countries of G-7 hold several meetings in a year, in which many agreements are made and official statements are issued on major events of the world. Initially, the agenda of G-7 was to find solutions to issues like economic challenges and climate change. Later, political and security related issues also got included in it. The decisions of G-7 on global issues affect the entire world.

For example, the G-7 created the Global Fund to fight malaria and AIDS in 2002. It provided financial aid to countries like Indonesia and Thailand during the financial crisis in 1998. During the Russia-Ukraine war, it decided to impose tough sanctions on Russia and help Ukraine.

Question-3: How many times did PM Modi attend the G-7 Summit before this?

answer:Indian Prime Ministers have usually been invited to the G-7 Summit. Manmohan Singh, who was the PM from 2004 to 2014, participated in the G-8 Summit five times.

PM Modi was first invited to the summit held in Biarritz, France in 2019. After this, America was to host in 2020, but America then cancelled the summit. Except this one year, PM Modi attended the G-7 summit every year from 2019 to 2024. In 2021, he participated in it through virtual medium. Then he attended the G-7 summit in Germany in 2022, Japan in 2023 and Italy in 2024.

Question-4: What is the meaning of the delay in India receiving the invitation this time?

1. Khalistan supporters in Canada demanded not to invite Modi: More than 7 lakh Sikhs live in Canada. After India, the largest number of Sikhs live here. There are ministers in the Canadian government who support the Khalistani movement. There is a big lobby in Canada opposing India, which does not want India-Canada relations to improve.

According to AK Pasha, Professor of International Relations at JNU, 'This lobby put pressure on the Canadian government not to invite PM Modi to the summit. The Khalistani movement is still strong in Canada. India has been demanding that Canada should deal strictly with Khalistani supporters, but the Canadian government has been supporting them to put pressure on India. Mark Carney's attitude is also lax in this matter.'

2- It was not confirmed that PM Modi would accept the invitation: Rajan Kumar, Associate Professor of International Relations at JNU, says, 'India also has ideological differences with the new government of Canada. In such a situation, it was not confirmed that PM Modi would accept Canada's invitation. If Trudeau's government was in power, PM Modi would hardly have gone to Canada. When relations with a country are not good, such obstacles arise. If the BRICS meeting is held in China, then also the issue arises whether the PM will go to China or not.'

Question-5: What will PM Modi do in the summit?

answer:Prof. Rajan Kumar says that only economic issues and climate change will be discussed in the summit. The leaders of the countries will also talk in vague terms on terrorism. However, the importance of G-7 has decreased now. Trump has imposed tariffs on the rest of its member countries. In such a situation, a kind of division has occurred within the G-7. PM Modi will definitely participate in the G-7, but it is less likely that he will hold bilateral talks with any country.

Question-6: Can Khalistani groups protest during this time?

answer:More than 1 lakh Sikhs live in the Canadian province of Alberta. There are going to be big protests in the city of Kananaskis where the summit is to be held. According to the Canadian news channel CTV, Kananaskis' senior police officer David Hall has said that 3 zones have been decided for the protest, from where the protest will be shown live to the leaders attending the G-7, because the leaders could not see or hear these protests.

In fact, the Canadian government considers 'peaceful protest' a public right. Earlier also, despite India's objection, Canada had allowed protests in front of the Indian Embassy.

Question-7: Will the G-7 Summit improve relations between Canada and India?

answer:For this, first understand a little background of the relations between Canada and India-

In 2023, the then Canadian PM Justin Trudeau accused India of killing Canada-based Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India outrightly rejected these allegations. After this, relations between India and Canada were not good.
After Trudeau's resignation in January 2025, Mark Carney became the new PM of Canada on March 14. On May 25, the new Foreign Minister Anita Anand and India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar spoke on the phone. This was the first official conversation between the two countries after Mark Carney came to power.
After this, Anita said in an interview that Canada, unlike America, wants to improve its relations with India again to increase business.
In an interview in May, Anita had said, 'There will be no compromise with the law, investigation is going on in this case (Nijjar murder case). We are also focusing on increasing partnership with India.'

Question-8: What could be discussed during the meeting between Trump and Modi?

answer:As usual, Pakistan's top leaders were not invited to the G-7 summit this time too. This is the first time after Operation Sindoor that PM Modi will meet Trump in Canada.

Prof. AK Pasha says, 'Trump has not been able to do anything special on Iran's nuclear weapons, Israel-Gaza and Russia-Ukraine war. That is why he is repeatedly taking credit for India-Pakistan ceasefire, while PM Modi has not said anything on this yet, because he does not want to upset Trump. PM Modi can meet Trump and explain his point of view, but Trump is outspoken. In such a situation, he can get into a confrontation.'

Prof. Rajan Kumar also says, 'PM Modi will not discuss anything about Pakistan in front of Trump. Trump is a mis-guided missile. There is no guarantee of what he will say at any time.'

Question-9: How is G-7 different from G-20?

Answer : G-7 has no permanent office and its member countries cannot pass any international law. The biggest issue in G-20 is the world economy, while political issues are also important for G-7.

The G-20, formed in 1999, includes the countries of the BRICS in addition to the G-7 countries. Apart from India, these countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey and the European Union.

According to Rajan Kumar, countries with new and growing economies have also been included in the G-20. Even though the agenda of the G-7 and G-20 is the same, the G-20 is a more influential group at the moment. In 2020, US President Trump also called the G-7 a very outdated group
