Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the newly redeveloped Tripura Sundari temple in Udaipur on September 22, making his visit a landmark moment for one of Hinduism’s most sacred shrines, The Sunday Exclusive has learnt.
Top officials in Tripura confirmed that while the PM’s travel plan is yet to be finalised, preparations are already in full swing. On Saturday, DGP Anurag and senior bureaucrats inspected arrangements in Udaipur, the headquarters of Gomati district. On Sunday, Chief Minister Manik Saha and his cabinet colleagues personally reviewed the site, underlining the importance of the event.
The 524-year-old shrine, constructed in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, has undergone a massive facelift under the Centre’s PRASHAD scheme at a cost of ₹52 crore, with an additional ₹7 crore pumped in by the state government. Officials described the redevelopment as “one of the most ambitious heritage restoration projects in the northeast.”
Significance runs deep: the temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, ranking alongside Kolkata’s Kalighat and Guwahati’s Kamakhya temples. For Tripura, which merged with the Indian Union on October 15, 1949, the PM’s presence would symbolise both cultural pride and political weight.
Adding to the religious tourism push, the Centre has sanctioned ₹97.7 crore for a first-of-its-kind 51-Shakti Peethas Park at Banduar, 4 km from the temple. The project—where CM Saha laid the foundation stone in July—will replicate all Shakti Peethas across the subcontinent, offering visitors a rare, immersive experience. Landscaped gardens, museums, food courts, souvenir hubs, and accommodation facilities are planned to turn southern Tripura into a spiritual tourism hotspot.
Senior officials told The Sunday Exclusive that Modi’s participation in the inauguration would give “unprecedented visibility” to the temple and place Tripura firmly on the country’s religious tourism map.
