Police Vehicle Attacked While Arrest in Shantir Bazar Incident

In a dramatic late-night operation, Tripura Police arrested two individuals allegedly involved in the violent clashes that broke out in Shantir Bazar under Kamalpur sub-division following the 24-hour bandh called by the Tripura Civil Society.

The arrests have brought new details to light about the growing friction between law enforcement and sections of the local populace.

According to the police sources, the first suspect, Riaz Debbarma, was apprehended from Maharani village under the Salema police station area on Saturday night.

However, the arrest operation quickly turned chaotic when an angry mob  attacked the police vehicle, damaging it in the process. The situation escalated within minutes, forcing the police to call in reinforcements from nearby stations.

Despite the attack, police managed to bring the situation under control and safely transport the accused to the station.

Later, another suspect, Ratnadeep Rudrapal, was picked up from the Shantir Bazar area on suspicion of direct involvement in the October 23 bandh-related violence.

“Both individuals are currently being interrogated. A detailed investigation has been initiated to uncover who orchestrated the unrest. Legal action will follow,” a senior police official told The Tripurapost on condition of anonymity.

Political Undercurrent Behind the Violence

The bandh, called by the Tripura Civil Society to protest alleged administrative negligence in action against the illegal Bangladeshi had already raised concerns of potential unrest.

Shantir Bazar, a politically sensitive pocket of the Dhalai district, witnessed stone-pelting,  and attack in residential area during the strike.

Security analysts suggest that the violence may have deeper political motivations

Police Step Up Surveillance

The Dhalai district administration has since deployed additional forces across Kamalpur and Salema to prevent further flare-ups. Senior officials have also begun mapping possible links between bandh organisers and those arrested.

“We are not ruling out any possibility, including planned provocation,” said a senior official. “The situation is stable now, but we are keeping a constant watch.”he added

As Tripura heads into a politically charged winter with upcoming civic engagements and organisational activities across the state as the TTAADC and VC elections are at the door front, the Shantir Bazar incident may become a flashpoint in the debate over law and order, political accountability, and citizen activism.
