The Women's T20 World Cup 2024 has been moved from Bangladesh due to the current political instability. The tournament was earlier scheduled to be hosted by Bangladesh for the second time, but now the event will be held in another country from October 3 to 20. The decision was taken after travel advice from the governments of several participating teams deemed it impractical to hold the event in Bangladesh.
This comes days after BCCI secretary Jay Shah revealed that the International Cricket Council (ICC) had requested India to host the event but it was rejected.
The ICC has announced that Dubai and Sharjah in the UAE will host the competition. Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka had also offered to host the tournament. ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said that it is a shame that Bangladesh did not host the Women's T20 World Cup, as we know that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have organized a memorable event.
Allardyce expressed his gratitude to the BCB for their efforts. He said, "I would like to thank the BCB team for exploring all avenues to hold the event in Bangladesh but it was not possible due to travel advisories from the governments of many participating teams. However, they will retain the hosting rights. We hope to host the ICC's global event in Bangladesh in the near future."
The tournament will feature 10 teams divided into two groups. India has been placed in Group A along with Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian team will begin its campaign against New Zealand on October 4 and will face Pakistan on October 6.
