At least ten people were killed and 20 others injured after a powerful explosion ripped through a vehicle near the Red Fort in Delhi on Monday evening, triggering a nationwide security alert.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that the explosion occurred inside a Hyundai i20 bearing a Haryana registration number. The vehicle’s registered owner has been detained for questioning as multiple agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and National Security Agency (NSA), probe the incident.
According to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, the blast took place around 6:52 p.m. when the car halted at a red light near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, setting nearby vehicles ablaze. “The cause of the explosion is under investigation,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and said he was personally reviewing the situation with top officials. He assured that authorities were extending all possible assistance to the victims.
While investigators have not determined the exact cause of the explosion, it comes hours after police busted an interstate terror module linked to banned outfits and recovered 2,900 kg of suspected ammonium nitrate, a key explosive ingredient. Officials, however, clarified that the Red Fort blast is not connected to that case.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos. “I saw flames from my house and then came down to see what had happened. There was a loud explosion,” said local resident Rajdhar Pandey. Another shopkeeper said, “It felt as if we were all going to die.”
Forensic experts are combing the site, and the area around Red Fort remains completely sealed off.
Following the incident, high alerts have been issued across Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Noida, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh.
In Mumbai, police have intensified patrolling and nakabandis, with orders for random frisking.
In Kolkata, security checks are underway at major markets and transport hubs.
In Noida, security has been tightened around Sector 18 and metro stations.
In Punjab, a Red Alert has been declared, with police directed to secure vulnerable locations.
Himachal Pradesh police have ramped up border vigilance and vehicle checks.
Authorities are also closely monitoring CCTV footage and social media activity for leads.
The explosion has sent shockwaves across the nation, reviving concerns about urban terror threats and highlighting the need for heightened security preparedness.
