Pradyot Debbarma Alleges Eviction of Tribals in North Tripura, Administration Denies

Tipra Motha Party (TMP) chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on Monday alleged that tribal families in Damcherra and Panisagar areas of North Tripura are being threatened with eviction from their ancestral land, protected under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Debbarma claimed he had received several complaints from local residents who were told to vacate their land without possessing formal land rights.
“Isn’t it unlawful that tribals are being evicted from autonomous district council areas only to give the land to outsiders? Tiprasa people are being deprived of their own land while outsiders are being settled,” Debbarma said. He further alleged that natural resources were being exploited without consent and that tribal voices were being suppressed with arrests under allegations of extremism.

However, the district administration rejected the charge. District Magistrate of North Tripura, Chandi Chandrana, clarified that no eviction drive had been carried out in Damcherra.
“The Indradanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) has started laying an underground gas pipeline. Before the work began, Rs 46 lakh was given as compensation to the landowner, who now resides in Delhi. She also signed a bond undertaking not to object,” Chandrana stated.

He added that the land in question falls under a reserved forest. The landowner is reportedly demanding Rs 90 lakh compensation for one kani (0.133781 hectare) of land, which the company cannot agree to.
The district administration said it had convened three meetings to resolve the matter, but the landowner did not attend.
