Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma on Tuesday declared that he was prepared to face arrest, accusing the Centre of deliberately delaying the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord signed ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Addressing a rally at Jantar Mantar — the culmination of a 2,500-km foot march by party activist David Murasingh from Tripura to Delhi — Debbarma asserted, “My silence does not mean I am afraid. If they want to unleash the ED or CBI on me, let them do so. I am ready to go to jail.”
He urged the Union government to show political will, recalling how Indira Gandhi had once overruled opposition to create the Autonomous District Council. “It is time for the Home Minister to show the same resolve,” he said, alleging that vested interests were misleading the Centre by portraying the accord as politically damaging.
Debbarma announced a village-to-village outreach drive under the national flag, pledging to seek broader unity. “If required, I will even touch the feet of CPI(M) leader Jitendra Chaudhury to appeal for unity,” he said, while accusing the Left of past atrocities against his family.
Lauding the public response to Murasingh’s march, Debbarma likened it to his own 2023 election campaign, which he claimed was powered by ordinary citizens’ contributions. Leaders from several North Eastern parties, including NPP’s James Sangma, as well as Tipra Motha MLAs and MDCs, extended solidarity at the rally.
