President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday underscored the growing strategic and developmental importance of the North-East in India’s overall progress, with Tripura receiving special mention in her address to the joint session of Parliament.
In her speech, the President said the North-East is now being accorded priority in the national development framework, marking a decisive shift from the past when growth remained concentrated in a few select regions. She noted that this imbalance is gradually being corrected through sustained investments in connectivity, infrastructure and human resource development.
Highlighting Tripura’s transformation, President Murmu said Agartala’s integration with the national broad gauge railway network has significantly strengthened the state’s physical connectivity with the rest of India. This enhanced rail linkage, she observed, has accelerated Tripura’s development trajectory while unlocking new opportunities in tourism, trade and employment generation.

The President pointed out that more than ₹80,000 crore has been invested in railway infrastructure across the North-East over the past 11 years. As a result, the capitals of Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Mizoram are now connected by broad gauge rail lines — a milestone that has expanded economic activity and improved social mobility in the region.
Health infrastructure also featured prominently in her address.

President Murmu described the past decade as a turning point for healthcare in the North-East, citing the establishment of major medical institutions, including the medical college in Sikkim and the Women and Children’s Hospital in Agartala. She said the upcoming specialised mother-and-child hospital in Agartala will elevate Tripura’s healthcare system, ensuring better medical services, particularly for women and children.
According to the President, these initiatives are laying the foundation for a strong, integrated health network across the North-East, reducing dependence on distant metropolitan centres for critical treatment.
Calling Tripura an “important partner” in the vision of a developed India, President Murmu said the state’s progress in connectivity, healthcare and infrastructure reflects its steady integration into the national mainstream of development.
She concluded by stating that the North-East is now emerging as a new growth centre of the country — a region that is no longer on the margins, but increasingly central to India’s economic and social advancement.
