President of India Droupadi Murmu on Sunday undertook a dive sortie onboard the Indian Navy’s indigenous Kalvari-class submarine INS Vaghsheer off the western seaboard. She embarked on the submarine at Karwar Naval Harbour in Karnataka, accompanied by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi.
During the over two-hour sortie, the President interacted with officers and sailors and witnessed complex operational manoeuvres, including multiple successful firings. The President’s Secretariat described the embarkation as a reflection of the Supreme Commander’s continued engagement with the armed forces in operational environments.
With this experience, Ms. Murmu became only the second President of India to undertake a submarine sortie, after former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The visit also marked her maiden embarkation on an indigenous Kalvari-class submarine, highlighting India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
In her message in the visitors’ book, President Murmu termed the experience “very special” and praised the crew’s preparedness, discipline and dedication, saying it reaffirmed the Indian Navy’s readiness to counter threats under all circumstances.
