Priyanka Gandhi in JPC Formed For One Nation-One Election

Information about the MPs of both the houses included in the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to be formed to review the 129th Constitution (Amendment) Bill presented in Parliament on Tuesday for one country, one election has been revealed. 21 MPs from Lok Sabha and 10 MPs from Rajya Sabha have been selected for this JPC.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Manish Tiwari and Sukhdev Bhagat Singh have been included from the Congress side. There are 10 MPs from the BJP, including Bansuri Swaraj, Sambit Patra and Anurag Singh Thakur, while Kalyan Banerjee is the name from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Apart from this, one MP each from 8 other parties including SP, DMK, TDP has been made a member of this JPC.

This committee will have to submit its report by the first day of the last week of the next session. At present, only the names of the MPs included in the JPC from the Lok Sabha have been announced. The names of 10 MPs for this JPC will be announced soon by the Rajya Sabha.

Law Minister Meghwal had tabled the Constitution Amendment Bill for one country-one election in the Lok Sabha on 17 December. Opposition MPs opposed it. After this, electronic voting was conducted to introduce the bill. After objections from some MPs, voting was done again through slips to modify the vote.

In this voting, 269 votes were cast in favour of introducing the bill and 198 against it. After this, the Law Minister again presented the bill in the House. According to media reports, BJP will send notices to 20 MPs who were absent in the Lok Sabha when the bill was introduced. The party had issued a whip to remain present in the House.

Seeing the opposition's protest on the introduction of the bill, Amit Shah said in the House that when the bill came to the cabinet, Prime Minister Modi had said that it should be sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). The Law Minister can make such a proposal.
