In a sweeping cost-cutting measure, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 will be conducted entirely behind closed doors, with no spectators permitted inside stadiums. The tournament has also been scaled down geographically, with matches now confined to Lahore and Karachi, instead of the originally planned six venues.
The decision has resulted in the cancellation of the opening ceremony, which was scheduled for March 26.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated that the move followed extensive consultations with the Prime Minister and national security agencies. He emphasized that the government has advised restricting large public gatherings in light of prevailing economic pressures, making it impractical to accommodate thousands of fans at match venues.
The situation has been further aggravated by a widening regional energy crisis, driven by the Iran conflict, which has caused crude oil prices to surge sharply across Asia. Despite the spike in global fuel costs, the Pakistani government has opted not to raise domestic fuel prices, thereby placing a significant financial burden on the state treasury.
As part of the revised plan, fixtures scheduled in Faisalabad, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, and other cities have been scrapped to minimize logistical and operational expenses. Naqvi issued an apology to fans, particularly in Peshawar, while assuring that the city will be considered for future editions.
To mitigate financial losses for franchises—especially due to the absence of ticket revenue—the PCB has pledged compensation. All tickets purchased in advance will be refunded within 72 hours.
Naqvi also delivered a strong warning to overseas players withdrawing from the PSL at the last moment in favor of the IPL 2026. Following the recent exits of Dasun Shanaka and Blessing Muzarabani, he confirmed that legal proceedings are being contemplated against certain players.
The 11th edition of the PSL is set to commence on March 26 in Lahore, with the opening match featuring Lahore Qalandars against Hyderabad Kingsmen. The tournament will see participation from a substantial number of international players, particularly from Australia, alongside domestic cricketers.
Historically, Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars have emerged as the most successful franchises in PSL history, with three titles each. Islamabad secured championships in 2016, 2018, and 2024, while Lahore claimed consecutive titles in 2022, 2023, and 2025.
Other title winners include Multan Sultans (2021), Quetta Gladiators (2019), Karachi Kings (2020), and Peshawar Zalmi (2017).
