Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stern warning to the United States against supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, as the war nears its fourth year. Putin cautioned that any strike on Russian territory using such weapons would provoke a “serious, if not devastating” response.
“This is an attempt at escalation, but if strikes with such weapons are carried out on Russian territory, the response will be very serious, if not downright devastating. Let them think about that," Putin told journalists in Moscow.
While emphasizing that “dialogue is always better than confrontation,” the Russian leader said his government had consistently supported continued diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation.
Across the Atlantic, US President Donald Trump appeared to dismiss the idea of Ukraine receiving the long-range, precision-guided cruise missiles. “It’ll take a minimum of six months or usually a year to learn how to use them. They’re highly complex. So the only way a Tomahawk is going to be shot is if we shot it, and we’re not going to do that,” Trump said during a media briefing at the Oval Office.
“We know how to use it and we’re not going to be teaching other people,” he added.
Meanwhile, tensions deepened further after Washington announced new sanctions targeting Russia’s two largest oil producers, Rosneft and Lukoil — marking the first such measures since Trump’s return to office.
Putin described the sanctions as “serious” but said they would not significantly harm the Russian economy. “They are serious for us, of course, that is clear. And they will have certain consequences, but they will not significantly impact our economic well-being,” he said.
Calling the move an “unfriendly act,” Putin added that it “does not strengthen Russia-US relations, which have only just begun to recover.”
