The Lok Sabha was adjourned within 13 minutes on the ninth day of the Budget Session on Monday amid protests by the Opposition, which demanded that Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi be allowed to speak in the House.
Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi said that he had met the Speaker an hour before the proceedings and was assured that he would be allowed to speak before the budget discussion. “You are not letting me speak. I want to know whether I will be allowed to speak or not,” he said.
When the House assembled at 3 pm, BJP MP Sandhya Rai was presiding over the proceedings from the Speaker’s chair. Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s claim, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said he was present in the Speaker’s chamber and denied that any such assurance had been given.
Sandhya Rai told Rahul Gandhi that no notice had been received from him on any issue other than the budget and asked him to inform the Chair if he wished to participate in the budget discussion.
Following this, Opposition members created an uproar, forcing the Chair to adjourn the Lok Sabha till 11 am on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Opposition is considering bringing a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, news agency IANS reported citing sources. At least 50 MPs are required to move the motion, with a written notice to be submitted 14 days in advance.
