Rampada Jamatia Elected Tripura Speaker Unopposed

The unanimous election of Rampada Jamatia as the new Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly marks a significant development in the state’s political landscape.

On Wednesday, during the fourth day of the Budget Session, he formally assumed office, ushering in a new phase of leadership in this constitutional position.

With no opposition candidate in the fray and no objections raised, his nomination was adopted unanimously by the House.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, along with members from both treasury and विपक्ष benches, extended their support.

Observers interpret this rare consensus as a reflection of political maturity and institutional respect within the Assembly.

Upon assuming office, the newly appointed Speaker underscored his commitment to upholding the dignity of the House and ensuring impartial conduct of proceedings.

Expressing confidence in his capabilities, the Chief Minister highlighted Jamatia’s administrative acumen, shaped by his tenure as a two-time MLA and former minister.
Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury also congratulated him, emphasizing the constitutional gravity of the Speaker’s role and voicing expectations that opposition voices would be accorded due space despite their limited numerical strength.

Congress Legislature Party leader Birajit Sinha echoed similar sentiments.

The Speaker’s post had remained vacant since the demise of former incumbent Biswa Bandhu Sen on December 26 last year, necessitating a timely appointment to ensure the smooth functioning of legislative affairs.

Elected from the Bagma constituency in Gomati district in 2023, Jamatia is a seasoned figure in tribal politics. He previously served as Minister for Tribal Welfare as well as Industries and Commerce in the cabinet led by Manik Saha.

Political analysts view his elevation as a calibrated strategic move by the ruling party ahead of the upcoming ADC elections.

By placing a senior tribal leader in a constitutional position of prominence, the party appears to be reinforcing its outreach to indigenous communities while simultaneously consolidating its broader electoral strategy.
