Rimdogittanga Shines as Best Garo Film at 71st National Film Awards

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday conferred the 71st National Film Awards at a glittering ceremony in the capital, celebrating excellence across Indian cinema.

Filmmaker Dominic Megam Sangma’s Rimdogittanga was named Best Garo Film, a recognition that carries the Rajat Kamal and ₹2 lakh each for the director and producer. Produced by Anna Films, Uncombed Buddha, and Joicy Studio, the feature captures rural life through folklore, fear, and prophecy as seen through the eyes of a 10-year-old boy.

The evening’s highest honour, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023, went to legendary actor Mohanlal. President Murmu hailed him as a “Complete Actor” who has convincingly portrayed “the softest of emotions and the harshest of realities” in a career spanning more than four decades.

Applauding the evolving landscape of Indian cinema, the President highlighted the rising prominence of women-centric narratives that confront patriarchy, poverty, prejudice, and inequality. “From mothers shaping values to women breaking stereotypes, these stories strengthen the social fabric,” she said.

This year’s edition saw 332 feature film entries, 115 non-feature submissions, 27 books, and 16 critics’ works, reflecting the diversity and vibrancy of Indian storytelling traditions.
