Ripun Bora, president of the Trinamool Congress in Assam, resigned from the party on Sunday. He claimed that people of the north-eastern state consider it a "regional party" of West Bengal and are not ready to accept it as their party.
Ripun Bora, in his letter to TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, said that he had given several suggestions to party chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to make TMC acceptable in Assam, but they were not implemented.
Ripun Bora said in his letter, "Assam TMC has great potential, but our progress is being hampered due to some problems, including TMC being seen as a regional party of West Bengal. To counter this perception, we gave several suggestions."
Bora claimed that he stressed the need for an Assamese leader at the national level of TMC. He said that he has suggested declaring the residence of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika in Tollygunge, Kolkata as a heritage site and turning Madhupur session of Cooch Behar into a cultural hub.
Bora said that despite several attempts for this in the last one and a half years, he failed to meet Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. He said, "Given these challenges and lack of proper solutions, I had to take a tough decision and decided to part ways with TMC." He joined TMC from Congress in April 2022.
He expressed gratitude to Mamata Banerjee for allowing him to lead the Assam TMC and praised her fight against "fascist and communal" forces.
Bora claimed that under his leadership, the party launched a massive membership drive, and established a strong presence in 31 of the 35 districts. “We expanded TMC’s reach to the block and panchayat levels and created key cells and departments like SC, OBC, human rights and minorities,” he said.
Earlier in the day, following Bora's resignation, Assam TMC youth wing president Mehboob Ali also resigned from his post and the party. "Due to personal reasons, I resign from the post of Assam TMC youth wing president and from the party," he said
