Rohit Sharma Bids Emotional Farewell to Sydney

Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma on Sunday shared an emotional post on social media, signaling what could be the end of his international career in Australia. Posting a photo from Sydney Airport, Rohit wrote, “One last time, goodbye from Sydney.”

His message came just a day after India defeated Australia by 9 wickets in the final ODI in Sydney. Despite the victory, India lost the three-match ODI series 1-2. Rohit, however, was the standout performer — scoring a half-century in the second ODI and a century in the third, earning both Player of the Match and Player of the Series honors.

The 38-year-old opener amassed 202 runs in the series, emerging as the top scorer. His century in Sydney — 121 off 103 balls — was particularly memorable, as it marked his 50th international hundred. With this, Rohit became the first visiting batsman to score six ODI centuries in Australia, further cementing his legacy.

The first ODI in Perth, shortened to 26 overs due to rain, saw Rohit dismissed for 8. He bounced back in Adelaide with a steady 73 before unleashing his trademark brilliance in Sydney to chase down 236 in style.

Rohit’s farewell note from Sydney carries deeper significance. India won’t tour Australia for an ODI series until 2027, and with the ODI World Cup in South Africa later this year, many speculate that Rohit might hang up his boots after the tournament.

Earlier this year, Rohit led India to the Champions Trophy title in March — his last major triumph as captain — before being replaced by Shubman Gill in the ongoing series. Last year, he also captained India to victory in the T20 World Cup, after which he retired from T20Is. He has since stepped away from Test cricket as well, playing only in the 50-over format.

As Rohit Sharma’s illustrious journey nears its twilight, fans across the globe are celebrating the man who defined modern Indian batting with elegance, consistency, and unrelenting passion.
