Violence erupted outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail late Tuesday as thousands of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters attempted to march toward the prison following unverified rumours that former prime minister Imran Khan had died in custody.
Khan’s sisters — Noreen Khan (Niazi), Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan — had arrived at Factory Naka near the jail after being denied yet another meeting with him. The family says they haven’t been allowed to see Khan for over a year, despite Islamabad High Court orders in March and October directing authorities to grant visitation twice a week.
Rumours of Khan being moved into solitary confinement, coupled with the family’s continued inability to meet him, triggered the rapid swelling of a sit-in demonstration into a confrontation. PTI supporters accused Punjab police of excessive force, alleging that officers abruptly switched off streetlights before launching an assault on protesters.
Noreen Niazi, in a letter to Punjab IG Dr. Usman Anwar, described the alleged police action as “brutal and orchestrated,” claiming it occurred “without any provocation.”
The standoff ended only after MWM leader Allama Raja Nasir intervened, urging demonstrators to disperse peacefully.
Khan’s sister Aleema expressed deep concern, telling Dawn that the lack of communication with authorities “raises fears that Imran may have been shifted” from the jail.
Last week, Khan’s sisters and PTI workers held a similar sit-in outside Adiala Jail over the same visitation dispute, but jail authorities have remained unmoved.
