South Africa tightened their grip on the second T20I at Mullanpur with a strong all-round show, setting India a challenging 214-run target and later pinning them to 162 for 9 in 19 overs.
India’s chase never found rhythm despite a fighting fifty from Tilak Varma, who held one end together while wickets kept tumbling at the other. Shubman Gill fell for a duck, captain Suryakumar Yadav managed only 5, and Abhishek Sharma contributed 17. Axar Patel chipped in with 21, but India’s middle order struggled to build partnerships.
South Africa’s pace attack turned ruthless in the death overs. Ortneil Bartman delivered a game-changing spell, removing Varun Chakravarthy, Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Dube in a single over. Lutho Sipamla dismantled India’s middle order further by dismissing Jitesh Sharma (27) and Hardik Pandya (20). Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi added one wicket each to cap off a disciplined bowling performance.
Earlier, South Africa powered their way to 213 for 4 after being invited to bat. Quinton de Kock lit up the innings with a blistering 90, while skipper Aiden Markram (29), Donovan Ferreira (30), David Miller (20) and Dewald Brevis (14) added valuable runs. For India, Varun Chakravarthy impressed with two wickets, Axar Patel picked one, and de Kock was run out.
With India falling short by 52 runs, South Africa levelled the intensity in the series and moved in with strong momentum.
