On September 22, the sacred soil of Tripura will witness a rare confluence of faith, heritage, and development. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Udaipur’s famed Tripureswari Temple—lovingly called Matabari—to offer prayers and inaugurate newly built infrastructure designed to transform the centuries-old shrine into a modern pilgrimage hub.

The Journey of the Prime Minister
According to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, the Prime Minister will arrive in Agartala around 3 PM on a special flight, before flying by helicopter to Palatana’s OTPC helipad. From there, he will travel by road—passing Jamjuri, Ramesh Chowmuhani, and Brahmabari—to reach Matabari. His visit will blend the spiritual with the symbolic: worship at the historic Tripureswari Temple, followed by the inauguration of the first phase of the Matabari Development Project.
While the official schedule is yet to be released, sources suggest that PM Modi will unveil key facilities including entry gates, upgraded pathways, and symbolic stalls for devotees—offering a glimpse into the temple’s envisioned future.
Matabari: Where Faith Meets History
For the people of Tripura, Matabari is not just a temple—it is identity, emotion, and pride. Counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas of Hindu tradition, the shrine attracts lakhs of devotees every year, not only from across India but also from neighboring Bangladesh. During Diwali and Durga Puja, the temple transforms into a vibrant spiritual epicenter, where faith transcends borders.
Local folklore often describes Matabari as the “soul of Tripura”—a place where history whispers through every stone and devotion pulses in every ritual.
Vision for the Future
The Matabari Development Project aims to balance the sanctity of tradition with the needs of a modern pilgrimage center. Wider approach roads, resting areas for pilgrims, organized stalls, and improved facilities for visitors are part of the plan. The vision is not only to enrich the spiritual experience but also to position Matabari as a religious tourism landmark of Northeast India.
This initiative, inaugurated by none other than the Prime Minister himself, marks a milestone for the state—signaling the central government’s commitment to blending cultural heritage with infrastructural progress.
Local Voices of Hope
The announcement has sparked waves of excitement among locals. For shopkeepers, hoteliers, and small traders, the project promises economic opportunity. For devotees, it means a safer, more comfortable pilgrimage.
“Matabari is our lifeline,” says Ratan Das, a small tea stall owner near the temple. “If more pilgrims come, our lives will also improve. Having the Prime Minister here makes us feel that our temple is not just a local treasure, but a national heritage.”

A Defining Moment
When Prime Minister Modi bows his head at the feet of Goddess Tripureswari and cuts the ribbon of the new infrastructure, it will not just mark the opening of facilities—it will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Tripura’s cultural journey.
On September 22, Matabari will no longer be only a centuries-old place of worship; it will become a symbol of continuity—where devotion meets development, and history embraces the future.
