Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday dismissed claims regarding the Supreme Court’s alleged directive to conduct simultaneous elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and village committees, describing such reports as misleading.
He clarified that the apex court has not issued any such order and emphasised that the matter remains under judicial consideration.
Addressing reporters after attending a programme at the Tripura Institution for Transformation (TIFT), Saha stated that certain media reports created a false impression that the Supreme Court had already mandated simultaneous polls.
“The manner in which the information was presented suggests an attempt to mislead the public. To the best of my knowledge, the Supreme Court has not passed any directive so far. The issue is still sub judice,” he said.
The Chief Minister further explained that the Supreme Court had merely sought the state government’s opinion on the possibility of holding the elections concurrently. “The court has asked whether the state government has any objection to conducting the elections simultaneously. We will submit our response accordingly,” he added.
Commenting on the prolonged delay in village committee elections, Saha said responsibility could not be attributed solely to the state government, noting that the elections have remained pending since 2016.
“The VC elections have been pending since 2016. Our government cannot be held entirely accountable. The TTAADC administration must also acknowledge its shortcomings. It had earlier proposed the creation of 123 additional village committees but later withdrew the proposal,” he stated.
Saha’s remarks came a day after Tipra Motha Party founder and ADC Reforms Committee Chairman Pradyot Kishore Debbarman claimed that the Supreme Court had directed the State Election Commission to conduct elections for 28 general seats of the TTAADC along with polls for 587 village committees.
Describing the development as a major achievement, Debbarman wrote on his official social media handle, “A huge victory for us as the Supreme Court today has directed the State Election Commission to conduct VC elections along with the TTAADC elections simultaneously. After 10 years, elections will be held at the VC level.”
