US President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to impose heavy tariffs on Russia to pressure it to end its war with Ukraine.
Trump said- I use trade for many things, but it is very good for ending a war.
Trump said that if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not sign a peace agreement with Ukraine within 50 days, a 100% tariff will be imposed on him.
Trump said that this would be a 'secondary tariff', which means countries buying oil from Russia, such as India and China, will also be banned.
Trump held a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office of the White House.
During this, Trump also announced to give more weapons to Ukraine. He said that Ukraine needs weapons to avoid attacks from Russia.
Trump said that under his plan, European countries will buy weapons from America and give them to Ukraine. Ukraine can be given Patriot missile systems, short-range missiles, howitzer shells and middle-range air-to-air missiles.
During a press conference in the Oval Office, Trump repeatedly expressed his disappointment with Putin. Trump said, 'I always have a good conversation with Putin. I go home, tell the First Lady that I talked to Putin today, we had a very good conversation.'
'Then she says, oh, really, another Ukrainian city has just been attacked.' Trump further said, 'Putin fooled Clinton, Bush, Obama, Biden. Can't fool me. Action is necessary now. Putin knows what the deal is.'
Expressing his displeasure at Putin, Trump said, 'I thought we had made a peace agreement four times, but the war continued. I am not responsible for the war, but now I am working to end it.'
Secondary tariffs will affect countries buying oil from Russia A White House official told CNN that these 'secondary tariffs' will target countries that buy oil from Russia, as there is very little trade between the US and Russia. This could have a big impact on Russia's economy.
US Ambassador to NATO Matt Whitaker said - These sanctions do not directly target Russia, but will affect those countries that buy oil from Russia. This step has been taken to weaken Russia's economy.
NATO Secretary General said - Arms deal with Ukraine is a game changer NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called this arms deal a game-changer in the meeting with Trump. He expressed the possibility of countries like Germany, Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway joining in the supply of arms.
Trump praised Europe and said, 'I did not think Europe was so enthusiastic before, but their energy is amazing. Europe wants to stop the Russia-Ukraine war. Their level of team spirit is amazing.'
On the other hand, American officials said that there are many considerations behind Trump's decision to send weapons to Ukraine. Instead of giving weapons to Ukraine directly, Trump wants to give it weapons through European countries.
Through this strategy, he is going back on his election promise to reduce America's role in the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump had vowed to withdraw American support to Ukraine at the time of election.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for more than 3 years. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation on Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Since then both countries have been attacking each other.
