Shahbaz Sharif at UN: Pakistan Claims Victory, Calls for Peace

At the United Nations on Friday, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif described India as an adversary while asserting that Pakistan emerged victorious in the recent conflict. Emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to peace, Sharif highlighted that the country had supported a ceasefire despite holding a strong position.

Sharif called for an impartial international inquiry into the Pahalgam attack, noting India’s refusal to cooperate and its politicization of the tragedy. He also thanked former US President Donald Trump for preventing a wider regional war, revealing that Pakistan had nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his peace efforts.

Addressing bilateral issues, Shahbaz expressed Pakistan’s readiness to engage with India on contentious matters, stressing the need for responsible leadership in South Asia. He strongly criticized India for unilaterally halting the Indus Water Treaty, warning that any violation would be treated as an act of war to protect the water rights of 240 million Pakistanis.

Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Kashmiris, voicing confidence that a fair plebiscite under UN law will one day empower them to decide their future.

The Prime Minister, accompanied by Army Chief Asim Munir, also held a closed-door meeting with Trump at the White House, lasting over an hour. No official visuals of the meeting have yet been released.
