Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has issued her first statement. She has demanded action against those who committed violence.
In her poignant address, Sheikh Hasina recalled the tragic events of August 15, 1975, when President and her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was brutally murdered along with many family members and colleagues like her brothers and uncles.
She expressed her deep respect for Bangabandhu and paid tribute to the victims.
Sheikh Hasina expressed her condolences to the victims of the recent violence and unrest that claimed the lives of many innocent people, including students, teachers and policemen.
She stressed the turmoil in the country since July and demanded action against those who perpetrated violence and bloodshed.
Sheikh Hasina said, "My condolences are with those like me who are suffering from the pain of losing their loved ones. I demand that a proper investigation be conducted into those involved in these killings and atrocities and the culprits be identified and punished."
Amid protests in Bangladesh, the Bangabandhu Bhawan, which was built to commemorate the martyrs and was being used as a museum, has been demolished.
Sheikh Hasina called it a "monument of freedom" and said that the monument was a reminder of the atrocities of the past.
The former PM said, "We two sisters dedicated the house that preserves the memories of the heinous massacre that took place at Dhanmondi Bangabandhu Bhavan on August 15, 1975, to the people of Bengal. A memorial museum was built. From common people of the country to famous people of the country and abroad have visited this house. This museum is a memorial of independence."
The former prime minister appealed to his countrymen to observe the National Mourning Day with dignity, stressing the need to remember the sacrifices made for the independence of Bangladesh. He urged people to honour the martyrs by offering prayers and laying wreaths at the memorial.
Sheikh Hasina is currently in India but it is not yet decided whether she will stay in India in future as well. It is being told that she is seeking asylum in some other countries.
According to reports, Britain has refused to grant her asylum. Apart from these, she is looking at Finland and United Arab Emirates as options.
After Sheikh Hasina's resignation, an interim government has been formed in Bangladesh. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been made the head of this government, who will work on establishing peace in the country and holding peaceful elections in the coming time.
Meanwhile, Hasina's biggest opponent Khaleda Zia has been released. Party leaders had also appealed to India for the deportation of Sheikh Hasina, who "has to face the law" in Bangladesh.
